The latest research by Juniper Research indicates that the revenue obtained by global operators from billing transactions is expected to increase from 9.3 billion US dollars in 2024 to nearly 15 billion US dollars in 2029, representing a growth rate of 59%.
This growth is mainly attributed to the increased awareness among consumers of this payment method, as well as the promotion of standardized APIs (application programming interfaces).
Operator billing, as a mobile payment method, enables users to make purchases by directly deducting fees from their mobile phone bills.
The report suggests that mobile network operators should adopt standardized APIs, including the operator billing settlement API. This will help shorten the product launch time, enhance business scalability, and ensure compliance with strict payment regulations. Through this standardization, the position and influence of mobile network operators in the digital payment ecosystem will be strengthened.
Furthermore, standardized APIs will reduce the reliance of mobile network operators on third-party aggregators, thereby increasing the revenue share of billing transactions.
The author of the research report, Elisha Sudlow-Poole, said: "Over the past decade, mobile network services such as voice, information and data have gradually become commoditized, resulting in significant losses of revenue for operators. Operator billing provides mobile network operators with opportunities as third-party service distributors and payment facilitators, helping to diversify revenue sources. The advancement of standardization will enable operator billing to be more widely adopted and become a feasible alternative to competitive digital payment methods.
